The Dougie (
i/ˈdʌɡiː/ du-gee) is a hip-hop dance generally performed by moving one's body in ashimmy style and passing a hand through or near the hair on one's own head.[1] There is no defined way to perform the Dougie, and each individual performs with his or her own variation.[1] Rapper Corey Fowler, nicknamed Smoove, of Cali Swag District said, “Everybody does it different…The way you do it defines you.”[1]
History
The dance first originated in Dallas, Texas,[2][3] where it took its name from similar moves performed by 1980s rapper Doug E. Fresh.[1][4][2] In 2007, Dallas rapper Lil' Wil triggered the movement with his hit "My Dougie."[3] Then, an individual who attended Texas Southern University returned home toSouthern California and taught the future members of Cali Swag District the dance.[2][5] Cali Swag District recorded the song "Teach Me How to Dougie" and filmed the music video in Inglewood, California during the summer of 2009.[2][4] Subsequently, the video along with the dance went viral onYouTube. Montae Ray Talbert, known as "M-Bone" of Cali Swag District, was killed in his car by an unidentified gunman.[4] According to the Cali Swag District spokesman, Greg Miller, "He was the best at doing the dance, and on tour he was always the one in the forefront … He helped bring it to the masses."[4]At the funeral, mourners did the dance for a tribute video, and Talbert's grandmother did it as part of her eulogy.[4]
According to Cali Swag District, “We are not looking forward to making another dance move. The 'Dougie' just picked up organically, we had no idea it would become so popular.”[6]
In late 2010 and throughout 2011, the Dougie was performed by a number of athletes and celebrities, including Chris Brown, Henri Lansbury, Reggie Bush,[2] Dez Bryant,[2] DeMarcus Cousins and Hassan Whiteside,[2] Glen "Big Baby" Davis,[1] Nate Robinson,[2]John Wall,[1][7] Braylon Edwards, Gaël Monfils[8][1] Wolf Blitzer,[4][9] Kate Upton,[10][11][12] and Michelle Obama.[13] In 2012, gymnastGabrielle Douglas did the Dougie upon winning the U.S. Olympic trials.[14]
Jerkin'
Jerkin' or Jerk is a street dance from Los Angeles.[1] Since 2009, jerkin' has gained fans along the West Coast and is gaining popularity on the East Coast.[2]
The dance itself consists of moving your legs in and out called the "jerk", and doing other moves such as the "reject", "dip", and "pindrop".[3]
Music
The rap group New Boyz wrote and recorded a hit in Los Angeles entitled "You're a Jerk",[4] while Audio Push wrote and recorded "Teach Me How To Jerk". As the jerk culture continues to flourish, several new groups specializing in the Jerk style are being courted and signed by major labels. Arista has signed the group Rej3ctz, and the label is looking seriously at many other jerk groups that are flourishing on the Internet.[5]
Dance crews
As Jerkin' mainstreams, new dance crews and artists are competing and performing at events not only in Southern California, but spreading to other parts of the world. The Ranger$ crew not only competes in dance contests, winning numerous awards, but have recorded several songs and have been signed to a major label. Other notable crews in the Southern California area are Action Figure$, U.C.L.A. Jerk Kings, and the LOL Kid$z.[5]
Fashion
People who jerk usually wear skinny jeans (varying from the unusual to the usual colors and washes), considered a rejection of the baggy pants style. Many elements of scene and the raver are used in the jerkin' movement, such as bright colored clothing, tight pants, or novelty graphic tees. Also people who dance the jerk wear hightop or retro shoes, including Chuck Taylor and Nike hightop shoes. Shoes may or may not be multi-colored[3]
